Install hangs on stein___.ttf

Now I can't reinstall ANY version of Cubase SX 'cos it hangs on 'copying
file stein___.ttf '.

Is this a known issue in 'reinstalling older versions'?

Hmmm, I seem to recall some minor fix regarding the display of Score Editor
and (1) wondering what that was and (2) is that related?

a ttf is a font file. Try going into the fonts folder and remove any
steinberg-esque fonts. Obviously don't do this is you have vst currently
installed.

Yes, I tried that. In fact removed as many references to Steinberg and
Cubase as I could find. No difference.

There could be a registry entry that's screwing things up?

yeah, but normally an installer would just duplicate the registry entry,
rather than stop...
