Is anyone using the IK Multimedia Stealthplug? I am trying to find an easier
way to record using this fantastic interface. It uses its own ASIO driver
which means when I record using it, I need to reroute everything from my
soundcards to it so I can hear what I'm recording to. Then when I want to
record anything from the soundcards, I have to route it all back. I'm
obviously missing something here!

Can anybody help?

I'll try :-)

I don't have a Stealth Plug, but it is in simple terms just another audio
interface.

When using an audio interface with its own low latency ASIO driver in
Cubase, unfortunately the way things stand, under normal conditions, you can
only use one device (or in exceptional circumstances wher the manufacturer's
device driver supports multiples of the same type of interface as Terratec
did with their EWS88MT cards where you could use 4 cards with their ASIO
driver). So if you want low latency as offered by the device's ASIO driver
you're stuck with having to re-route.

There is another way, whereby you can use multiple cards from different
manufacturers with their WDM drivers, but you lose low latency - plus the
individual cards need to be word-clock synchronised or at best you'll get
timing inconsistencies and your audio tracks may drift to unusable
proportions. Direct X may support using multiple cards simultaneously, but
the latency levels will still be higher than you'll achieve with the
device's own ASIO driver and you'll still need word-clock synchronisation.

I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that someone was working on an ASIO
'wrapper' type program or driver that will allow several devices made by
different manufacturers to be seen by Cubase as a collection of cards under
a single driver, thereby enabling you to input a signal from one device and
hear it through another. I can't remember the name of it (I thought for a
few minutes there that it might have been a proposed new feature in ASIO4ALL
but I can't see any mention of it). I don't know if it has been developed
into any kind of stable driver (it would be quite a feat of programming), or
indeed if I've imagined it.

For now, unless someone else knows better, I think you have to re-route
still. Sorry.

Nick
